I recently listened to this TED talk while getting ready one morning. As a homeschooling mom, one of the many benefits of this type of education is being able to tailor lessons according to my children’s interests. My son loves playing the piano, and the hours he has spent doing so would not have been available to him if we did not homeschool. Likewise, we would not have been flexible to take trips to see relatives or visit historical sites together had it not been for homeschooling. There is certainly a place for traditional education – one must be able to read, write, and do math to survive in the world. But education is so much more than the three “r’s”.
Sir Ken Robinson presents these ideas in a concise and humorous way in this video. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
*Note: The book he mentions, Epiphany, was published under the title The Element. I hope to read it in the near future.

Thanks for sharing. Will send this link to my friend here who is contemplating on getting her 9 yo daughter to do homeschooling. If we had kids, I’d definitely do exactly what you’re doing, teach them myself. 🙂 Well done on teaching your kids at home. I don’t know how you do it. Oh, dear . . . I’d probably go crazy if I had 5 kids to teach day after day. As the youngest in the family of 5 (3 boys and 2 girls) , I know what 5 kids can do, individually and/or collectively. 🙂 We had housemaids, plus grandparents who live next door, to help out when we were little but even then, I remember my mother looking really exhausted on most days. Anyhow, just to say that I admire you for doing the homeschooling — all on your own with Terry’s help/support, of course. I pray that God will give you the special grace and strength you need everyday to continue what you’re doing.

Elna, I cannot tell you how much this encouraged me. It seems the Lord often uses you to share a good word with me just when I need it. I always need the prayer, but I have been struggling even more than usual the last few days. I cannot thank you enough for your “word spoken in due season”! Thank you!

Many of us teachers and parents do not value creativity; we don’t want to see a purple cow. We want the brown cow and no coloring outside the lines.
