I have had Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes on my “to read” list for ages. I first saw it in my mom’s 6th grade English classroom when one of her students left it there one weekend. I was about in 5th grade then, and I remember that the tiny print and thick paperback were daunting. I recently found a copy of this Newbery Medal winner at Goodwill and decided to finally cross it off my list.

Johnny Tremain is a young apprentice silversmith living in Boston at the start of the Revolution. An accident changes his life and thrusts him into an important role at the beginning of the revolution. Lots of familiar names and places appear in the pages of this book, most notably, Paul Revere. Ms. Forbes does a great job at painting the villain as exceptionally evil.

I enjoyed this book, but it wasn’t quite as good as another Newbery winner set in the same era, Carry On, Mr. Bowditch. However, Johnny Tremain does bring the revolution to life and paints Boston in living color. It provides historical information in an interesting way.

Here I am at the end of the year, busily trying to catch up on my blog writing. I am finally sharing a few photos of the kids’ fall soccer season for our friends and family far away. (Yes, they finished the season in November…so I’m only a month behind. haha!) This year, the kids got to play a scrimmage game almost every week, so they all had a good chance to win some games. In seasons past, they would play one big tournament game at the end of the season. I haven’t heard  from our homeschool group if there will be a spring soccer season (it might be basketball in the spring). So, this may have been Lauren’s last soccer season since she graduates in May. They all had a great time getting exercise and, of course, seeing their friends.

I tried to capture a few of their finest moments on the field. It’s a joy for me to get to watch them learn new skills, practice teamwork, and have fun. Once again, I am grateful to the Lord for the many opportunities He has given us in the great state of Oklahoma.

In October, our church graciously showered us with love for “Pastor Appreciation Month”. It was quite an unexpected surprise. We feel loved by our church family each and every time we see them, but this was certainly a blessing.

One family gave me and Terry a gift certificate to spend a night away at the Two Hearts Inn, a bed and breakfast, in Edmond, Oklahoma. They also recommended that we eat at a restaurant they love called Texas de Brazil. While my mother was visiting us for Christmas she watched the children so we could go on this little getaway.

Before our check-in time, we visited a bookstore in Oklahoma City called Full Circle Books. It was the most charming bookstore I’ve ever visited! We also visited the mall – which was crazy-busy due to the holiday rush.

Every room had these wonderful rolling ladders! We only bought two books here, but the temptation to buy more was real! After this, we visited Barnes & Noble and then headed to Two Hearts Inn.

suitehearts

You can select different suites at the Two Hearts Inn. We chose the “Suite Hearts” room. It’s lovely, with almost every imaginable amenity.

suite-tub

The hot tub had a gas log fireplace above it. It kept the room warm enough that we didn’t need to have the central heat on in the room.

suite-tv

There was a large screen TV, and this very interesting couch – it was comfortable, but hard to get out of!

There was a stocked fridge and lots of goodies to snack on.

They were kind enough to leave us this cheesecake dessert free of charge. It was delicious!

goodies

Coffee, tea, and snacks, and don’t forget the wine glasses (no, we did not drink wine or champagne, but they did have sparkling water!).

shower

I’d never used a shower like this one – it was like a rain shower, the water came down from the center.

For supper, we ate at Texas de Brazil, another first for me – a restaurant that required reservations! This restaurant offered a salad bar with all kinds of unique things on it: salmon, sushi, paper-thin pineapple slices, potatoes, cheese, the list is endless! The male servers all dressed in Brazilian attire and carried the meat around the restaurant on skewers. If you wanted some, they would stop and slice it for you, and you take it with the tongs provided at your table. Each time we got up to get something from the salad bar, our server came and folded our napkins for us. We sampled lamb, filet mignon, some type of Brazilian steak (which was my favorite), and Terry tried some sausage and pork. And they offered us more! We finally ran out of room. They also brought us mashed potatoes, fried bananas and some cheese rolls. It was so delicious. We are both hoping to make this an annual tradition. haha!

I tried my first sushi! It was really delicious! The restaurant was dark, so it was hard to get good photos.

The next morning, we enjoyed breakfast in the sunroom at Two Hearts Inn. Terry ordered strawberry waffles and I simply got the plain ones. They gave us these delicious cranberry scones served with lemon butter -wow! I wish I had just ordered a plate of those! They were so good.

Love his smile in this one!

After breakfast, we visited two other bookstores and then headed home.

It was a wonderful trip made possible by some sweet and thoughtful friends. I certainly felt spoiled and very undeserving of this time alone with my husband. This holiday was nicer than our honeymoon. The Lord has brought us a long way in 19 years, and I give Him all the glory! Thank you, Lord, for your blessings on me.

And thank you, friends, for reading.

My mom sent this recipe to Laci and she was thrilled to get to make it for her soccer unit last fall. It was so popular, that Leslie made it for her soccer unit, too! It’s a great snack.

Crunchy Trail Mix

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups peanuts
1 1/4 cups raisins
3 oz. chow mien noodles (I used rice noodles)
1 pkg. peanut butter chips
16 oz. M & Ms

Directions:
Mix everything together in a bowl. Store in an air-tight container.

It was easy to package it in individual sacks for soccer.

This recipe is sure to cure any case of the “munchies”.

We begin a new heading this week!

Part VI – Words and Terms Describing the Study and Teaching of Scripture

This week’s term: Anthropology – “Anthrop” (man). Anthropology is the knowledge or science of man. Speaking Biblically, it deals with the issues of how scripture describes man’s condition and conduct before God.

Last week’s term: Glorification – The work of God whereby the believer has the old nature eradicated, and is finally conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. This, though minutely realized as we grow in grace, will not be, in a major sense, realized until this mortal has put on immortality, and we are given a body like unto His glorious body.

It’s hard to believe that it’s already Christmas again! It’s been a very busy and exciting year. The Lord has brought us through some trials and granted us a multitude of blessings, many of which I have written about here. Thank you for sharing them with me, for reading and for commenting.

Merry Christmas from Oklahoma!

band

Lauren played in a band concert on Tuesday, December 13, 2016, with the local homeschool band. Here are a few videos for our family (and anyone else).

James Bond Theme (Advanced Band only)

In the Mood (Advanced Band only)

Silent Night (Intermediate and Advanced Bands)

Frosty the Snowman (Intermediate and Advanced Bands)

Jingle Bell Rock (Intermediate and Advanced Bands)

I took the first four videos with my Nikon, but my battery got dangerously low, so I took the last one with my iPhone.

We are pleased that Lauren is able to play with the advanced band after only two years of playing ever. Of course, it’s always great to see and hear Dad’s trumpet being put to good use. I know he would be proud.

We are so thankful for the many opportunities we have here in Oklahoma. The Lord is so good to us!

Merry Christmas!

It is, therefore, never perfectly exercised, but will always, in some measure, be present in the true believer’s life.

My Laci Elizabeth turns ten years old today! Hard to believe my cuddly, sweet Laci is almost as tall as I, and already in the double digits!

Laci has a very loving heart. She is always leaving me love notes in surprising places, like on my pillow or in my Bible. Just a few weeks ago, I found this one on the keyboard of my laptop when I opened it:

note-laci

She expresses her love in art, too, because, while all of my children show creative talent, she is the one who loves to draw.

flag

Her binder has her version of the British flag.

laci-lips

“Why Laci, what big lips you have!”

“The better to kiss you with, my mother!”

Laci is a friend to her little brother, which is a blessing. I often hear them playing games together and it always puts a smile on my face. On Fridays, they often build forts and sleep in them. She has had a hard time watching Leslie, who is 18 months older, move closer to the teen years. The Barbies have been given away, for Laci didn’t enjoy playing with them without Leslie. But she is finding her place in our ever-changing home, which is good preparation for an ever-changing life.

Laci has a tender heart. If we have to correct her behavior, she usually comes to us later with a heartfelt apology, or leaves us a note saying she is sorry.

I can’t believe my “baby girl” is already ten years old! If I keep thinking about it, I know I will grow melancholy. (Why must the years pass so quickly?!)

Happy birthday, Laci! I am so thankful that you came into our lives ten years ago. I love you more than words can express, and I am so proud of the little lady that you are.

With love,
