Ah, the sights and sounds of summer! The honeysuckle scent in the night air, the sound of crickets, tree frogs and cicadas singing in unison and, of course, the watermelon! What more could you ask of summer? She brings her beauty – green grass and trees, gorgeous flowers and glowing sunsets – with grace and then just as gracefully, she fades into fall. Her carefree (or school-free!) days become just a memory as the rhythm of autumn sets in.
While we are still enjoying summer, I wanted to share these photos of the kids on a sweltering summer day last week. Yes, along with all the beauty and serenity of summer comes the heat. But the heat is bearable with a little water from the slip ‘n slide, and a little watermelon in the hand!

Here are some photos of Lauren, Mitchell and their friend, Maria, enjoying some tasty Hope watermelon. They had been having some fun playing on the slip ‘n slide and then drying off on the swing with a slice of watermelon to quench their thirst.

Hope‘s motto is “a slice of the good life”.

The good life indeed! Here’s the proof:

We’ll be heading out in the morning for our summer vacation! We have been so blessed this summer already, I almost feel guilty taking a wonderful vacation on top of everything else! We would appreciate your prayers as we travel. We are excited about seeing my family in North Carolina, but we will miss our church family here.
As Christians, we can celebrate our “good life” in Christ 365 days a year!
Praise the Lord!

Happy summer, everyone! :o)

Those of you who are faithfully checking in on me know that this post wasn’t published on Friday. It’s really Saturday. I cannot post a “Fitness Friday” when in reality it is Saturday. Therefore, I have sub-titled this post “Slim Down Saturday” in order to keep things honest and real.
We are busily preparing for our vacation, but I’m taking a few moments to post. I’ll be gone about two weeks! I’ll be having “blogging withdrawals” by the time I get back! However, I should have TONS of new photos to post, [I just finished emptying my memory card on my camera to make room!!]and lots will be happening, so when I do get back to my spot in cyberspace it should be interesting.

For my Fitness Friday, um, (clears throat) I mean Slim Down Saturday, I wanted to post about our feet! After all, our feet are the foundation of our bodies! If you’ve ever stood in Super church on tile floors for an hour or more wearing two inch heels, then you know how important your feet are. If you have ever broken your little toe on a ceramic toilet in the dark, then you, my crippled friend, really know what our feet mean to us! Yes, I’ve lived through both experiences. Feet are important. They are everything!! Think of it like this: Sore feet = Sore attitude. Well, that’s true for me anyway.
I recently purchased brand new tennis shoes. Or sneakers. Whatever you call athletic shoes, I bought some recently. I couldn’t believe how pitiful my old shoes looked. I had bought them back when Clinton was in office. Yes, it was definitely time to get new ones. I bought them in the spring of 2000. Eight years ago. My goodness. And, amazingly, they really don’t look as bad as you would think eight year old tennis shoes/sneakers would look. They had seen me through many a Denise Austin workout, and many a long walk. They are good friends. In fact, they would make a good commercial for Nike. But, all sentimentality aside, I had to retire them.
This time, I bought New Balance. They are a half-size larger than my last pair. I have used them for about a month, and I am a very satisfied customer.

NIKES, circa 2000 model. You were a good shoe.
Off with the old and on with the New Balance. Much better. (And I really love the pink and gray combo!)
After I bought my new shoes, I was telling my Mom about how much better my feet felt while exercising. She told me that she purchases a new pair every year. She’s read that every 500 miles you should buy new tennis shoes/sneakers. She walks two miles a day, so the “once a year pair” is just right for her. Mine were a little over that, but hey, better late than never.
I hadn’t realized how uncomfortable my old shoes were making my exercise until I used new ones! The difference was amazing! Unless you’re a swimmer or skier, then your shoes can make or break your workouts. And walking is a workout! Be sure your footware is foot friendly. Buy a new pair every year.
Feet are so important that legendary basketball coach, John Wooden ,(formerly of the UCLA Bruins) taught his players how to properly put on their socks before he taught them a single play. After all, what good is dribbling and shooting, if your feet hurt so badly you can’t even walk?
Remember, if you take care of your feet, your feet will take care of you!
Here’s this week’s funny! Have a great week!!

Note: For those of you who are not fond of rashes, then this isn’t the post for you. I photographed my poison ivy progress because I knew what a great human interest piece this would be. I just now realized that I might be the only human interested. So, consider yourself warned!
We figured out that I got the poison ivy from Terry’s clothes! He had torn down some vines growing around a tree that the kids played around, but he washed thoroughly after coming inside. He knows I’m really sensitive. *Flashback* Sometime in July, 2000. We just moved back to Hot Springs. We move into a house that was infested with fleas. We had them everywhere, and we had all wood floors! It was terrible. I had played in the yard with Lauren, and noticed an itchy spot down by my sock line. I’m assuming it’s a flea bite. Till it spreads. Then I think “Infected flea bite!” Then it forms blisters and I realize “Poison Ivy!” It lasted for three long weeks, but was only on a small portion of my leg.
Okay, back to present day. This time around, it was no small portion of my anatomy. I awoke Thursday morning to itching on my left arm. It quickly spread. My left forearm, and my right hand. Then my upper right arm. Then my neck and finally, my forehead. (sorry, no photos of the head. I’ve got some pride.)
My left arm began swelling to the point I could barely move my hand. The swelling crept down into my fingers. It began to blister, and then ooze. I looked like I’d been in a terrible fire. The itching was bad, but the pain was worse. We had decided on Saturday to go to the doctor on Monday. We don’t have insurance yet, so a doctor’s visit would be some bit cheaper. By Sunday morning, I looked worse. Terry ordered me to take Benadryl and stay away from people! That afternoon, he insisted that I go to the ER and get help. It was looking really bad, and feeling awful.
At the ER, they gave me the “mother of all shots” according to Terry. His eyes bugged out when he saw the needle. I didn’t look. And moments after, I couldn’t look, because I couldn’t move. The pain from that shot was excruciating for an hour afterwards. (Thank you, Lord, for Ibuprofen!!)
The prednizone shot worked great. By seven o’clock Sunday night, the swelling was down by half. I’m also taking prednizone pills which have helped reduce the rash rapidly. I’m hoping I’ll look almost normal (no comments please!)by the time I see my fam in NC. I’d hate to frighten my nephews!
Anyway, without further ado, here are the photos chronicling my adventure. Interestingly, as the rash heals, it seems to look worse. It’s brighter, but not as swollen. All a sign of healing, I hope!

July 12th…two days into this nightmare!
(Sorry this is kinda blurry!)
July 14th…four days into the nightmare, and one day after seeking treatment.
July 15th…five days…and counting.

Today. See. It’s got a nice color, don’t ya think? I mean, really, I give it a ten for color tone.
I’ve got so much to post about! Fitness Friday tomorrow, and then it’s time for Homeschooling stuff! YES! The new school year is right around the corner!
So stay tuned!
And, Dixie, if you’re out there somewhere will you please email me???
Hello?? Anybody there???

Have you ever known someone who was really smart? I don’t mean someone who knows a lot of facts, but someone who was a genius? All of my friends are very intelligent, ;] but none are geniuses. At least, if they are, they aren’t show offs about it! (So guys, are you? C’mon I can take it. I won’t be jealous or anything. You can tell me.)
My Dad heard Danny Kaye speak once and he said the guy had a photographic memory. When it was his turn to speak, he got up and re-enacted the speech before him, word for word and even made the same movements! That’s a genius!
I’m so glad that I do not have a photographic memory. Otherwise, the verse that jumped out at me wouldn’t have been such a surprise. Because, I’d read it before. I’d even underlined it! But I do not remember it. That’s definitely not a genius! But that’s okay. I love surprises! So here’s the verse that I underlined, but for the life of me don’t remember reading. But I like it. I guess I liked it then. And I can see why. It’s a great verse. (Am I talking to myself??) Wait. Don’t answer that. Here’s the verse!

Psalm 9:10 And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, has not forsaken them that seek thee.

He hasn’t forsaken those that seek after Him! He won’t ever forsake those that seek Him! Now that’s a great verse, isn’t it?

Even a non-genius like me can grasp that.

More than once! :]

Yay! We made it to another Friday! Congratulations everyone! This week, I really need some help. I get in a rut eating the same snacks, and sometimes, a healthy snack is nowhere around, so I’ve either been hungry and miserable, or I indulge in the “not so healthy” choice.
So, how ’bout it? Do you all have any favorite low-cal treats or sweets? I’d love to hear what you make or buy that satisfies your cravings. Email me or post it here.
Thank you so much! Oh and happy Friday!! :]

PS I’m dealing with a bout of poison ivy on my hand and forearm…I have no idea how this got on me. Anyway, if you have any help to offer with that, I’d appreciate it. I’ve been using Caladryl.

Hello, Friends, neighbors and countrymen! Lend me your ear…uh, I mean eyes! I am very behind on sharing photos, so here is a run down of some of my favorite shots from this summer. I do hope they don’t bore you.
Oh! And Laci is doing better, thanks for the prayers. She goes for a re-check of her ears on Thursday, and I’m not sure when we’ll see the ENT yet. I’ll keep you posted.
Have a great day, and thanks for your friendship!!
Laci covered herself up and snuggled up with her baby when I put her down for her nap recently. She stayed this way long enough for me to snap a photo! :]

Hamming it up for the camera!
I love Leslie’s rosy cheeks in this photo.
Here’s little Laci trying to look busy!Lauren built a house of books! So, when you’re done reading them, don’t put them away, build!!

On June 21st we all got to go swimming at the Powell’s house. We had such a good time! Here are my favorite pictures!
Nice goggles!! We didn’t know Mitch knew Obama! Here’s Terry with Barack Obama!! Wow! Okay, it’s not the real thing, but a great likeness, don’t you think??
Mrs. Joyce Powell has gorgeous petunias!!

Here’s Lauren and her Dad in a self-portrait
On our date a few weeks ago, Terry stopped by KFC to get us drink on the way home. He told the drive thru lady, “Give me a Mega Dr. Pepper” Well, we had no idea how big “Mega” was…now we know! (half a gallon?? No, we didn’t finish it…not even close!)
Leslie thought Dad’s brief case needed a remodel
Here’s Laci in her cutsie (did I just say “cutsie”? Whoa. That’s a little too…sweet for me. I mean darling)little swim outfit that Mrs. Joyce had at her house. I just love this photo!
“Look at me, Mom! Isn’t this fun??”

Playing dress up!
“Boo!”
Two sweet girls just hangin’ out together.
Laci is feeding her baby! And she’s sharing her own drink! Now that’s love! :]
I tried to get a photo of Mitch’s missing tooth, and then he lost another one, so I’ll have to get a better photo! You can kinda see the hole in the lower right side in the middle…does that make sense??

I just wanted to report that I finally worked out five times since my last Fitness Friday post!!! Yep, and it only took me till July!

Hope you have had a great holiday! I thank the Lord for allowing me to live in a free country.

Happy Fourth, and happy Friday!!

Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom: and to depart from evil is understanding. Job 28:28

I often make the Christian life so complicated. But this verse sums it all up in just a few words. This doesn’t mean it’s always easy to do, but it is pretty clear. I hope and pray that I will keep striving for wisdom and understanding.

Many of you out there share my love of reading. I believe most of us have our kids enrolled in the summer reading program at our libraries. Reading is FUNdamental, as the old literacy slogan used to say. I believe that. With all that is in me, I believe in reading.
Well, I am writing to tell you, that while Hope, Arkansas has many wonderful qualities, it does have one flaw. The library is lacking. Big time.
Upon registering for the reading program and getting our cards, I found out that no one knows what the prizes for the program are. No one knew the minimum requirements. No one knew anything about it, other than you got a reading log, which only kept track of number of books read, not the time you spend reading. My son can count the number of books, because his books are short. My daughter reads longer chapter books, and therefore doesn’t read as many. “Okay. I’ll make up my own incentives, and not even worry with this contest.” I thought.
We explored this library and it took all of twenty minutes; all the while I was struggling to keep my mouth from standing open in disbelief at how small this library is!! “This is Bill Clinton’s birthplace? And Mike Huckabee’s???” I thought as I perused the shelves. The books are ancient. They charge a .50 fine per item, per day! That isn’t too bad, if they had something to show for it, but they don’t!! So this tells me one of three things: 1. no one uses this library 2.everyone is extremely conscientious 3. they are blowing the revenue from fines on magazine subscriptions. There are no videos either.
But, my dear book loving friends, here is the most disturbing part:
Today I went to try to find some books for the kids. They were all sick and I thought it would be a nice surprise, and something quiet for them to do. I checked out my few things. I could only get three mystery books for Lauren because you cannot check out more than three books on any given subject. I headed to the desk to check out. I asked the lady if their was another branch (hoping against hope in Hope) sadly, she shook her head “no”. I asked about inter-library loans, and to my horror and dismay she said “No, we don’t do that.” Trying to hide my shock and be kind, I said “You’re kidding.” (smiling). “No. We used to do it but it just got out of hand.” I’m thinking, “Got out of hand? As in “we had people lined up to the street to borrow a book from another county??” I can’t believe that. I took my books and headed out the door. That was it. I had no way out. No other branches to patronize, no inter-library loans??? They certainly had no funds to start purchasing more media. My library loving life was over, or so it seemed.
When I arrived home, I found out that I can get a library card to the Texarkana public library or the Nevada county library. These are near to us, so at least it is something.
My feeling of desperation assuaged somewhat after hearing this news.
Still, I am absolutely amazed at this. My library is my gateway to other worlds!
“So, what’s your point, Valerie?” you may be asking. Well it is this:
If you have a great library, then please tell them the next time you drop in. Or write to them and say thank you. Bake them some homemade cookies. Buy them a Christmas gift. Pay a fine you don’t owe. Do something, but whatever you do, do not take it for granted. If you have a good library, then you have a wonderful window to the world, and that, my friend, is priceless.

Unfortunately, Laci is back on antibiotics. She has her seventh ear infection this year. She was supposed to see and ENT specialist in Texas, but, we moved. She will be seeing one here sometime in the near future to possibly get tubes in her ears.

As I opened my fridge, I realized that seeing a bottle of pink medicine is normal for us. I am so thankful that the Lord allowed us to have a lady who works at a pediatrician’s office here in Hope at our church. She helped us get right in to see the doctor. What a blessing! I’m also thankful for medicine and for a fridge! :] (Please ignore my messy fridge, I’ve been too busy to clean it lately. Okay, I have to be real. I haven’t wanted to clean it! :] )
Please keep Laci in your prayers. Oh, and Mitchell and Leslie, too! They started running fevers today as well.
