If you know me in real life, or if you have read this blog for very long, you know that I am not a good cook. I can follow recipes, if they don’t ask for ingredients that I cannot pronounce. I am always looking for recipes that use few ingredients and do not require my standing on my feet for long periods of time. I love my crock pot. I love my oven and ย my microwave. I also love drive-thru restaurants, but that’s a post for another time.

I usually use my crock pot each Sunday for our noon meal. I sometimes use it during the week, too. One thing I love to do with my crock pot is bake potatoes in it. It’s a tip my sister gave me a long time ago. You wash your potatoes, wrap them in foil, then prick them through the foil with a fork, cook on high for about 4 hours. This was working very well until I noticed that I was jabbing bits of foil into the potato, and after it baked, it was very hard to remove said bits of foil. Yesterday, as I prepared our potatoes, I mentioned my dilemma to my husband. He said, “Prick them before you wrap them.” I said, “Oh. Okay.” I had been concerned they wouldn’t cook up right if they foil wasn’t pricked, but, I discovered that I was wrong! They baked beautifully! I was going to serve them to the family when my husband said, “Why don’t you just mash them, with the skins on?” I said, “Oh. Okay.” (Boy, what would I do without him to help me cook? And make money for me to spend? Yikes.) I pulled out my handy-dandy hand mixer and whirred away. I threw in a stick of butter so I could do something that he didn’t suggest, and so I could pretend I was Paula Deen.

Here they are! They tasted very good! No, perhaps not “Paula” good, but good enough.ย The little girls were bothered by the brown skins, but I thought they just made them look more nutritious. ๐Ÿ™‚ย
Ingredients:
4-6 potatoes of your choice
1 stick butter or margarine
Salt to taste
Directions:
Wash potatoes, prick with fork.Wrap each potato in a piece of foil. Place in crock pot. If baking 6 or fewer potatoes, cook on high for 4 hours in a 5 quart crock pot. If you cook more than 6 potatoes, you may need to add to the cooking time. Since I’ve never cooked more than seven potatoes this way, I cannot say exactly how long it will take. If you know, please leave me a comment! Thanks!ย
Once they are tender, mash with a fork just a bit, then mix on high, or mash by hand. Add butter or margarine and salt to taste.

Sit down and relish these potatoes which required so little effort. Have your kids clean up the mess, then take a nap. ๐Ÿ™‚

Enjoy!

My children have allowed me to experience every emotion under the sun – laughter, tears, joy, panic, comfort, and sometimes, they teach me things, or remind me of lessons learned. Lauren helped to remind me by the note below, which she wrote in May, that life is short.

The note says:
Dear Matthew,
I know you can’t read, but this note is more to myself than you. But, enjoy your childhood, it’s preciously short.

Yes, Lauren, it is short. I remember when you couldn’t read, either. I love these precious moments! I love being a mother.

Phew…I’m still working on catching up here at the blog. I thought I’d share a few miscellaneous photos from the summer. Thanks so much for indulging me, friends! ๐Ÿ™‚

Leslie lost her two front teeth in May!ย

They built this block tower using every block we had! ๐Ÿ™‚

Sibling love: Leslie and Matt coloring together.ย

Lauren and Matt after playing in the sprinkler. I was glad Matt used eye protection. ๐Ÿ˜‰ย

Matthew, trying to be like big brother.ย

Laci and Matt, folding laundry.ย

Matthew’s borrowing Dad’s shoes.ย

“I’ll be with you in a minute, I’m on an important call.”ย

Ah…these kids! They always make me smile! ๐Ÿ™‚

This morning, Mitchell got ready for church, picking out a suit coat, dress shirt and tie all on his own. He always wears a button-up dress shirt on Sundays, but we don’t require a tie and coat every week. I noticed after he was dressed and ready to go, that he’d put a paper napkin (it even has a green flower design on it), in his coat in place of a handkerchief! It was too precious a moment to pass up – I had to photograph it. I hope you can see the napkin clearly enough in the photos below. My camera doesn’t capture the detail that I wish it did.

I just wanted to pop in and share this today. It made me smile. We’ve had such a good day in church. I enjoyed teaching my little Sunday school class for the tenth week today. (Wow, time flies!) I was blessed and encouraged by my husband’s sermon from James 5 this morning. I enjoyed eating lunch with my family, and now, I’m going to go snuggle up and watch The Andy Griffith Show. After ย that, I hope to enjoy a family tradition – a nap! ๐Ÿ™‚ย
Happy SONday!ย

Lately, our house has reminded me of the March family household. Remember Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women? And their play, “Rodrigo”? Well, we didn’t have four little women, or a piano to play “Ghosts at Midnight”, but we did have our own show, complete with sets, costumes and even tickets. ๐Ÿ™‚ This post is just for me, so I can have a memory of the Basham Family Production Company.ย
Sign says “No food or drike [sic] in the show”

We each had our own tickets. Mine says, “Valerie you are invited to have show Valarie elen Basham the 1st. Laci and Leslie’s show.” Leslie made the tickets, so I was surprised she put Laci’s name first! ๐Ÿ™‚ Sweet. Oh, and you can see where our tickets got punched, too! She couldn’t find our single hole punch, so she brought in our three-hole punch. It was cute.ย

As you can see, Matthew was “free”, but I don’t recall that any of us had to pay. ๐Ÿ™‚

The first show was called “Cheef” [sic]- here are our actors.
They did a great job, by the way! (And yes, I’m a very biased critic!)
These are photos from the second show, called “Mermaid Rock”. It was a musical. The songs were originals, too! ๐Ÿ™‚

Here’s another photo of the sets for the second show. This used to be a normal looking living room.ย

Part of the audience. Matthew was enthralled and wanted to join them. ๐Ÿ™‚

I know, my house is a wreck. They got it all cleaned up and put back together, but it just gets to be a wreck again. The good thing about the chaos is that it’s a good sign that my kids are enjoying their lives. They are creating, they are laughing, and best of all, they are making memories.

As I’ve mentioned before, we are using Apologia science for the first time this year with our oldest child. We just completed the first module (unit), which was about famous scientists and their discoveries or contributions to science. Here are some photos of our favorite experiment so far – and yes, we all get involved when it’s experiment time!

Lauren was in charge – she gathered our supplies. (The spray cleaner just happened to be in the photo.)

Measuring carefully.

This experiment required us to boil some purple cabbage. I never have liked the smell of boiled cabbage.ย

The mixture in the soda bottle was supposed to blow up the balloon – and as you can see, it worked! We were all so excited! ๐Ÿ™‚ย

All done.
ย Recording the results of her experiment. It’s always nice when it turns out right. ๐Ÿ™‚
When Lauren took one look at the enormous book for science this year, she didn’t think it would be a very fun course. Science has never been one of her favorite subjects, anyway, but that book was a tad bit overwhelming. It was kinda scary to me, too! But this year, she’s finding out that science is, in fact, a lot of fun!ย And that’s the result I was hoping for.

On Saturday, July 28, some friends invited us to spend the day with them at a theme park nearby, called Magic Springs. It’s a place I’m very familiar with, since I grew up in Hot Springs, where the park is located. It was so very sweet of them to include us on their celebration of their daughter’s 12th birthday! They were only in our church for a short time, while the husband was working in our area. The mom and daughter had to return home to Indiana, but we enjoyed their fellowship while they were here!

Lauren and Mitch went with their family to ride the “big” rides, so I don’t have any photos of their fun! ๐Ÿ™‚ Terry and I took the three little ones to do the smaller rides. It was an *exceedingly* hot day. I can’t emphasize that enough – it was 112 degrees…with a much higher heat index. I think we all fried a portion of our brains that day, BUT, we did have fun! ๐Ÿ™‚ lol!

As some of you may know, Terry and I met at my home church’s teen camp when we were 15-ish. Each year, on the last day of camp, we used to come here as a group. I never spent the day with him back then, seeing as we hated each other’s guts and all, so it was nice to come here as friends. ๐Ÿ™‚ I made some wonderful friends at camp, many with whom I still keep in touch. Spending the day here brought back so many good memories. *sigh*ย

Here is our group! (Minus me)ย

The Gwin family – happy birthday to their sweet girl!
The girls riding a ride.

Leslie’s not as scared as she looks. ๐Ÿ˜‰ย

Did I mention it was hot? My poor babies are baking here, waiting on the ride to start.ย

Matthew was supposed to be smiling, but just as it snapped, he moved his eyes. It’s suc ha cute photo! Here he’s waiting in his covered wagon while the girls enjoy a ride on something he was too small for.

Finally! It started moving!ย

I rode this little balloon ride with the girls and Matthew. I was very happy that I could fit!ย

The girls also rode it alone. We all enjoyed riding the carousel, too, but I didn’t get a photo.
Last, but not least, the others got to ride the Log Plume, or log ride, as I have always called it. The line was an HOUR for this five minute ride! I couldn’t go because I couldn’t take the wagon in line, so I waited with our things. At least I was able to get this photo.

Blurry, but another shot as Terry, Leslie, Laci and Matthew (not visible) ride the log ride.
Here’s a short clip of them as they come down the slide. Click play below or go HERE.

My parents operated a shop that sold blown glass figurines when I was four and five years old. I can still remember the thrill I had as I entered the “employees only” entrance each day of summer, flashing my ID badge (yes, I had one!) to the receptionist and heading inside the park. On breaks, my parents or sister would take me to ride the rides. In the afternoon, I took a nap in the storage closet – mom plugged in a fan for me – and I rested on a pallet. As I walked along with my family two weeks ago in the heat, inhaling the scent of tobacco and funnel cakes, I remembered those happy, carefree days. As I rode the rides and felt the wind in my face; as I beheld the valley that I once called home, I was overwhelmed with thankfulness. How wonderful it is to be born in a beautiful place!

I watched in amazement as Matthew did this the other day, and today, I caught it on camera! I hope you enjoy it. ๐Ÿ™‚ Please adjust volume first, it might be loud. Click play below or go HERE.ย Oh, and I apologize for my loud laugh! : |

I’m doing my best to stay current on family events, since that’s really my primary reason for blogging. One great blessing of the Internet is the ability to share photos and family news with loved ones far away. Of course, I’m not sure if many of my family members are reading, but I know a few of them are. Also, I like keeping my memories together in a safe place so that my children can view them someday. I still have much to catch up on, but I’ll get there, eventually. ๐Ÿ™‚

Here are some photos of Mitchell’s birthday yesterday. He had a very fun day!

Everyone ready to meet Nana in Arkadelphia! ๐Ÿ™‚

Gift from Nana – and a delicious meal, too!ย

Free birthday sundae!ย

All the kids wanted to pose with this willow tree.ย

After lunch, we came home and let him open his gifts. He didn’t ask for anything extravagant. His list said he wanted “markers and/or coloring pencils” (I splurged and bought both.) He had also written that he wanted a reading lamp, a watch, and a small calendar. The only thing we were unable to get hims was the watch.ย
Here he is with the calendar and coloring pencils.

Here are the markers! ๐Ÿ™‚
He was so happy to get the reading light! ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m so blessed to have easy-to-please kids.ย

We also got him this little science experiment kit that he saw at Cracker Barrel. He’s looking away for some reason! (He doesn’t stay still for very long!)

The highlight of the day was getting to open this satchel from his Grandma and Granddad! Grandma made it according to his specifications – he sent her a detailed pattern in the mail. She did a fabulous job, above and beyond what he’d imagined! He LOVES it!ย

Oh look! They even packed it with some surprises!ย

Wow! It was filled with goodies! A monocular, beef jerky and a pocket knife that has a spoon, fork and other tools! He’s in heaven! ๐Ÿ™‚ย

We had planned to order him a Batman cake, but the bakery was out of the kit to put on it. I had to improvise and make my own, which wasn’t nearly as cute as the store’s! Mitchell was so sweet about it, though. It tasted good, so that counts for a little, I guess. ๐Ÿ™‚ย

Aw! This pose was his idea. โ™ฅ
It was late at night, after church, before we could sing to him and have his cake. Here’s a short video of the moment. Please adjust your volume before viewing, it might be a bit loud. Click play below, or go HERE. Thanks for reading!ย

My darling son, you are so sweet
From the top of your head to the soles of your feet.
You are so tender, loving and kind
You stop to help one who’s fallen behind.
You help out your sisters as they try to play,
You show them sometimes a better way.
You hold little brother, and carry him, too,
You’re showing him Jesus, who lives inside you.
You care for the dog and you sweep and you mop,
You work hard till you’re done – you do not stop.
You read and you read, till your head starts to fall,ย
Then you say “I’m not sleepy, no not at all.”
You cuddle and hug, give a peck on the cheek
You turn days to sunny that should be quite bleak.
I do know for sure that your smile is so bright,
On dark, cloudy days, we don’t need a light.
You love your sisters, your mom and dad,
Your heart breaks whenever you have been bad.
You love all your family, ones far and ones near,
When you have to leave them, you shed a tear.
Each day you get up without being told,
You open your Bible, in heat and in cold,
You read some from Proverbs and some other book,
I’m so happy that into God’s Word you do look!
God gave us a treasure when He gave us you, son,
I would not want another – not a single one!
Your gifts for laughter and music and love
Make you unique, you’re sent from above.
If someday you sit and smile at your past,
Wishing “Oh why, why couldn’t it last?”
Remember God gave you today for His sake,
So live for our Lord, and make no mistake.

He sees you, He loves you, He knows you, too,
And He always wants what is best for you.
As life’s road twists and turns, keep your eyes on the sky,
Keep looking to Him when your heart cries out “Why?”
Your myriad talents I hope you will use
For His cause on Earth, please make no excuse.
Life may not be easy or fun or carefree,
But God has a plan, just wait and see!
I am one blessed mother, to call you my boy:
My laughter, my light, my comfort, my joy.
All of you children make each day of mineย
Full of good things, like songs and sunshine!
I thank God each day for giving me you,
And Lauren and Laci and Leslie, too!
Yes, I’m thankful for Dad and dear little Matt.
I’m blessed beyond measure, I’m sure of that.
Holding a baby alligator at the library story-time hour this summer. His adoring sister is on the right. ๐Ÿ™‚
Happy birthday to my wonderful, strong, smart TEN year old boy! I love you, Mitchell Lee!
