I just wanted to share a few photos and a little video of my youngest kids enjoying the Math-U-See math manipulatives, aka, blocks! This is our first experience with this curriculum and so far, we give it 2 thumbs up!
Even my 7 month old joined in the fun! haha!

Enjoying play time/ learning time. 🙂

Smile and say “Quadratic Equation!”  😉

Okay, this is more play time than actual school time, but I say it still counts as learning. 🙂

 Matthew says, “Hmm, what’s this?”
“Yep, they make noise when I smack ’em together.”

“They make good drumsticks, too!”

“And they even pass the “feels good to my gums” test! These are keepers!”

He was playing so sweetly with them, I just had to try to get a short video of the moment. And, no, I didn’t let him have the itty-bitty ones! 🙂

Starting to *finally* love teaching math,
Valerie

I really loved the photo of my baby that I captured below. The pose looked like one that you might see on canvas! I thought I might be able to make it look like an oil painting using my Paint Shop Pro computer program. I’m not very good at it, but I enjoy playing around with it and learning new things. I really liked how it turned out!

I’m always looking for tutorials online to learn new ways to enhance photos using this program. If you have found some that have been helpful, please share! 🙂 I’m particularly interested in learning to design my own blog background. I would really appreciate any feedback. 🙂

I am continuing with my reading of If by the late Amy Carmichael, missionary to India. I have been convicted time and time again by the brief paragraphs which comprise this book. In reading some of them, I have to really stretch my mind to fully grasp her meaning. Others jump right out at me and bop me between the eyes.

The following paragraphs really hit home, especially in my capacity as a pastor’s wife. My job is serve people. I do my best, but I so often fall short. I go to bed some nights struggling mentally with “what I should do to show love to my church family.” And then, sadly, other nights, I go to bed grumbling mentally over some off hand remark that someone made to me. I’m such a contradiction! I know it grieves my Lord, and therefore, it grieves me. These passages gave me much food for thought. My goal is to love my Lord first, and to love like my Lord. If I can do those things, I will be a much better pastor’s wife,  mother, friend, and the list goes on.

From If:

If I know little of His pitifulness (the Lord turned and looked upon Peter), if I know little of His courage of hopefulness for the truly humble and penitent (He saith unto him, “Feed my lambs”), then I know nothing of Calvary love.

If I deal with wrong for any other reason than that implied in the words, “From His right hand went a fiery law for them. Yea, He loved the people”; if I can rebuke without a pang, then I know nothing of Calvary love.

If in dealing with one who does not respond, I weary from the strain, and slip from under the burden then I know nothing of Calvary love.

I especially struggle with that last one. I often grow weary of the work and want to slip out from under it, like a child sliding from his mother’s lap. I must keep working, even when I am weak.

Striving to love like HE loved,
Valerie

First of all, I’d like to thank those of you who entered my homeschooling giveaway! It was so exciting to log on and find SEVEN comments at ONCE! Wow! Thank you! I know that most of you strive to make your homeschooling days full of joy and wonder, but if you’re like me, every now and then, your enthusiasm wanes. I hope this will be a blessing to the winner by adding some “newness” in the mid-term. And the winner is (I’ve always wanted to say that!)…..

Michelle Corning!!
Michelle, please email me (see “contact” page) to receive your prize. You may choose either a $25 gift card to CBD or a subscription to Home School Enrichment Magazine.

And…because I was feeling EXTRA generous this morning, I decided to draw out one more name. This second place winner will receive a subscription to Home School Enrichment  magazine or a renewal, if they already receive it. That winner is…

Stephanie A.!

Please contact me about your prize!

Thank you, again, for not only entering my little giveaway, but for hanging in here at the blog with me and reading even when there’s little or no excitement in my postings. I’m trying to find a nice way to say thank you to ALL of you. 🙂

With love,

Valerie

It is a beautiful day here! 61 degrees, clear, sunny skies and a slight breeze. It’s also Valentine’s Day! (Bet you weren’t aware of that! haha!) It’s simply too beautiful to be stuck inside all day staring at our school work – even though we try to keep school fun around here, it can’t compete with a gorgeous day! Not after all the cloudy, cold and wet days we’ve had lately. No way.

So, we canceled school today! {gasp!}

But, we’re still learning. Today, Dad took the kids outside to clean up the yard, burn the burn pile that has been slowly building over the last few days and, most importantly, to begin work on the TREE HOUSE!  My wonderful sister and brother-in-law in North Carolina built a tree house for their three boys. Well, my kids wasted no time in trying to talk their dad into do the same thing. They were so excited when he agreed to do it!

They took advantage of this lovely day to get outside and work on their new project. It will take a few days to complete, but it will definitely be ready by spring. 🙂

Father and son, working hard! 🙂

Dad, pouring concrete mix in the holes.

The older kids brought water for the concrete.

Leslie, admiring the work being done. 🙂

Laci, just enjoying the sun and warm weather.

The work crew, proud of their progress!

Reason I love homeschooling, #424: We can “seize the day” to learn the things that aren’t in school books.

My children have enjoyed playing with their baby brother more than any toy they’ve ever owned. They love setting him down inside boxes and pushing him around. They lay him down on blankets and pull him around. They set him in the stroller and ride him around. They tickle him, they hold him, they kiss him, they do whatever he will let them do, and so far, he’s been very longsuffering!

I captured this short video last week and wanted to share it. Matthew was enjoying being treated like royalty by his siblings. The older ones are mighty cute in this, too, I might add. And, YES, I’m prejudiced! 🙂

Hope you like it!

One proud Mom,
Valerie

This post is dedicated to my Mom. She patiently endured my wishes for long, flowing hair by allowing me to put half-slips, hose, and even towels on my head for pretend hair.

I snapped this photo of my third daughter, Laci, just moments ago.

Some things must be hereditary, right, Mom?

Like my hair?
And, yes, I let her go outside like this. 🙂

The best part is, she told me I could show this one day at her wedding! I had her sign a form stating as much. Okay, I didn’t have her sign anything, but I think she would have if I’d pushed it. Oh! The joys of being the Mom! 🙂

Ouch.

No, I didn’t just stub my toe. That was a groan from the Holy Spirit within me; a wince of pain from my soul as I feel the sharp pangs of conviction after today’s reading of If by Amy Carmichael.

I read today:
If I can write an unkind letter, speak an unkind word, think an unkind thought without grief and shame, then I know nothing of Calvary love.

Ouch, again. I must say, I’m guilty of writing unkind letters and words, and I’m definitely guilty of thinking unkind thoughts. I’m even guilty of spewing out these words from not just my pen or keyboard, but from my lips!

This is particularly convicting to me today. I find it to be no coincidence that I read these words today. I just deleted a blog post that I spent the better part of an hour composing last night. It was not my typical style. In this post, I let out all of my frustrations with my fellow Christian. My one consoling thought is that I did get under conviction after I wrote it. So much conviction, that I could never bring myself to hit “PUBLISH POST”. I re-read it this morning with fresh eyes and fresh heart and was compelled to hit “DELETE”. Now, I am ashamed that I ever thought those things and wrote about them at all. You will never see that post, but my Heavenly Father did. Oh! How I hate hurting Him! Yet, I continue to do just that!

This book has sent me to my knees many times to repent of my selfish, thoughtless and loveless actions. I need my Father’s help so badly.

With a heavy heart,
Valerie

A few snapshots from our week:

Laci made some blueberry muffins!
She’s getting to be a big helper!

Enjoying each other. 🙂

Lauren painted her toenails!
Oh yes, and her fingernails, too!
We enjoyed two days of snowfall! Well, I enjoyed it! My kids are actually saying they are tired of snow…TIRED? How can that be? We will probably not see snowfall like this for many more years to come! We usually have exceedingly hot summers, so I’m enjoying the cold, icy air. (Yep, call me “crazy”! lol)

We have had a good week of homeschooling. We had tests this week and have been getting used to using Math-U-See for math for two of my kiddos. Leslie is reading more each day, and feeling so grown up! Mitchell is enjoying the Spanish that we got for him. We are enjoying some new read alouds, too! We are reading Ben and Me and In Grandma’s Attic.

How has your week been? Have you entered my giveaway yet? If not, click HERE and scroll down to read about it and enter! The prize is a choice of a $25 gift card to CBD or a one year subscription to Home School Enrichment Magazine!

Often during the hustle and bustle of life, I fail to really notice the special moments that I get to witness as a stay at home mom. Yes, sometimes I even catch myself wishing that I could be “out in the world, making some money, seeing grownups and making a name for myself”. Then, moments like the ones I photographed today happen and I bow my head and thank God for the opportunity to be here, now, enjoying these precious, fleeting days.

So, because time flies, I stopped today and bronzed some moments that will pass all too quickly. Mitchell had placed his baby brother on his bed to play with some of his stuffed animals and look out the window at the lovely snow on the ground. I am so thankful that I was able to snap the following string of images for my “online scrapbook.”

I thank the Lord that I’m not just a Mom, but a stay-at-home-homeschooling Mom!

After this last one, I just had to put my camera down and go cuddle with my sweet boy! 🙂

Blessed beyond measure,
Valerie
